Frequently Asked Questions
We hope you’ll find the answers to any questions you may have about buying a willow coffin below, but please do not hesitate to contact us if we haven’t covered what you’re looking for.
How do I order a coffin?
You can contact us directly by any of the following ways:
through the website contact form
email: wildheartcoffins@gmail.com
phone: 07787 435685
We are very happy to answer any questions and discuss options for your wicker coffin. Once you have placed your order, if required, we will contact the undertaker/funeral director to request inside measurements of the coffin and any other information we might need.
How long does it take to make and deliver a willow coffin?
If we have your desired size and design in stock, our coffins can be delivered within one week. If your coffin needs to be made to order, and depending on design, we might need to allow up to 14 days for delivery, in order to have enough time for the willow to be soaked and woven.
It is also possible to collect your coffin direct from our workshop.
Are your willow coffins suitable for cremation?
Yes. All our willow coffins are made from natural materials and are suitable for all types of burial. As our coffins are all made with a solid base, they are also readily functional for cremations.
As of January 2024, our coffins are now fully accredited with the FFMA (Funeral Furnishing Manufacturers’ Association) meaning they have gone through rigorous testing to ensure they are 100% safe to use in all crematoria across the UK.
Are willow coffins suitable for natural or green burials?
Definitely! Our wicker coffins are made from sustainable, UK grown willow, and other natural materials, making them perfect for green burials and for use at natural burial grounds.
How much does a willow coffin cost?
Please see our Coffins page for a full list of prices on all our products. For a fully lined, adult sized coffin, prices start at around £700 (price excludes wooden nameplate and delivery).
Can we help weave our coffin?
We believe that helping to weave your coffin can really help to integrate the loss of a loved one. As such, we are really happy to accommodate you in helping to weave at least a part of your coffin. Please get in touch with us so we can discuss this further.
How else can a coffin be personalised?
There are many different ways we can help you personalise your willow coffin. Examples include:
~ using your own material to make the coffin liner (we can do this for you, or you are welcome to do it yourself)
~ weaving personal items into the coffin itself (these must be natural and fully biodegradable for use in natural burials)
~ including a drawing (for example a favourite animal or plant) and/or meaningful words on to the nameplate.
Can I buy a coffin direct from you?
Yes. Some funeral directors will say you need to buy a coffin through them, but this is not the case. Many people prefer to buy direct from the maker as it gives them more freedom of choice. In this way, you can also be assured that you are buying a 100% UK made coffin (not always the case, unfortunately - even if you’re told otherwise!) If you do choose to buy direct, it is advisable to let your funeral director know this as early as possible.
We are happy to deliver your coffin either directly to you, your funeral director, or anywhere else.
Are the willow coffins lined?
Yes. All our coffins are lined with unbleached calico as standard, and a waterproof plastic liner can be added on request. For environmental reasons, I prefer not to use a plastic liner, and will always check with the funeral director if they feel one is absolutely necessary. They also come with a natural calico mattress and pillow filled with organic hay cut from our own farm.
Do I need a nameplate?
If you are having a home burial, then you do not need to have a nameplate. Most cemeteries and crematoriums, however, do require one, with the legal name of the person who has died, their date of birth, date of death and age at death on it. We can make one of these for you, if desired, or you are very welcome to make your own or source one from elsewhere.
You can often choose more freely what to have on a nameplate if you have a natural/green burial.
Do you deliver overseas?
I’m afraid not. Since Brexit, exporting products out of the UK has become a lot more difficult and expensive and I can not guarantee a coffin would arrive in time for a funeral.
